After 24 years of Sunshine and Flowers, the
tradition of beauty, appropriateness, reasonableness and completeness
continues into the new century. Sarah Kidder grew up in the
flower shop always knowing that the values of Sunshie and
Flowers would one day bless her as they have blessed so many
others.
Sunshine and Flowers began in 1978 when Sharon
Kidder, an English and Art teacher, took the combination of
her sense of etiquette, use of language and her visual art
to a new level. In the first few years of running the downtown
Oakland flower shop, she began working with various nonprofit
groups such as the Art Society, Lincoln Child Center, Girl’s
Inc., and in 1980 became the chairwoman of the Christmas Show
at Dunsmuir House and Gardens. For ten years Sharon, along
with her husband John, and children Sarah, Jonathan, Marian
and Rebecca, decorated the forty-acre estate inside and out,
and expanded the Christmas show into numerous other events.
Sharon was all the while learning, growing artistically, and
teaching the fine art of flowers, business and etiquette to
her children.
Having apprenticed under Sharon, Sarah
was groomed to become a partner in the business, and in the
spring of 2000 took it over as her own. With years of experience
at an early age, Sarah is continuing Sharon’s work with
daily orders, seasonal decorating, wedding flowers and event
décor, and has expanded into wedding coordination.
Sarah’s style and vision is an extension of Sharon’s.
As a team, they shared ideas and dreams. Sarah looks forward
to making those dreams into realities for her and her clients.
